Seems that the Malaysian Trumpet Snails are a surefire way to guage O2 in the tank...if they're at the top, everybody needs more oxygen. What'cha think?

I do not think this is a good indicator. I have seen MTS at the top of the tank when all of my plants are pearling. Just my opinion.Houston Areas Aquatic Plant Society
