Re: New Tank/Plant Question
I searched high and low for a cost effective lighting solution for my 55 gallon. The fixtures that it came with were like yours and rated at 18w/fixture (I had two). In the end, I just built a new hood out of wood that I could put a dual T-12 shop light in. Now I have 80 watts, and while it's not blinding, since it's a natural-style tank with no co2 or fertilization going on, I don't really have a need for any more light.
The other solution that I took a long look at was some compact flourescent retrofit kits that would convert your existing fixtures to higher wattage.
