I just saw this deal, it's more than you need, but it's a great deal for people that use excel a bunch like me.

Yeah I've heard that erythromycin works well too, but then you have to worry about your bio-filter dying off. The fun of algae, damned if you do, damned if you don't!!

well that thread in the link states that it wont kill off your bio-filter.

i guess it would be a last resort type thing.

Personally I've had good luck with using excel, and actually pouring it on the problem areas/plants. I also will pull out the plants that are bad and dip them in hydrogen peroxide, then put them back in the tank. It's worked pretty good so far.

                    Re: algae problem.

i had a little bit forming on my tank cause i didnt set my timers on right and had the full 192watts on all day on my 30g and i tried the direct shot of excel and you could see it dieing but i got carried away and dosed 1/3 of the big bottle  8O

i had to do a waterchange and my HM is starting to show ill effects from it

i will say that it did help get rid of the algae but it took a small portion of my plants too.

                      Re: algae problem.

well i've added TONS of nitrates and it still doesn't show up in my test kit. i went from 1/4 teaspoon every other day to 1/2 - 3/4 per day..

i'll black out the tank for 3 days before antibiotics.

I changed the water and sucked up as much as i could 2 days ago. this is what it looks like now

I can see there is current blowing alot of it around in the SAG. but it isn't going anywhere.   I'm going to have to do something drastic soon, its getting depressing. I found an old picture when it looked really good

have you tried a different test kit? i upped my nitrates and noticed it soon after but had to keep it consistant since the plants were sucking it up.

i read a toothbrush is really handy for removal too.

                            Re: algae problem.

Well I tested my kno3 again tonight. Shaking everything better this time and finding my nitrates just above 20. So i'm adding my K and trace tonight to make sure the plants have everthing.

I think I may have a problem with my co2. I have the co2 going into the intake of my canister and I don't think its dissolving well. I can hear water sloshing around in the canister and probably the UV filter.  I'm wondering what I can add, if anything, that will help it dissolve. Maybe a good diffuser under the intake.

Any idea how these diffusers/bubblers would work?

HEY, EK. i saw your post on this thread. did you buy anything? want to?

Maybe a DIY inline diffuser, but my filter is over taxed as it is.

i prefer diffuser under the output to swirl the micro bubbles all over the tank. i get really good co2 dissolved into my tank water with somewhat low bps.

i already purchased some things from john and think he has already shipped out to me, got me a lot of co2 poly tubing and a couple of clippard check valves.

Well, still no change. I want to give erythromycin a chance but i don't know where to get it at a decent price. I found one website (british) that said he got 12 x 500 mg tablets for 8 bucks over the counter at the pharmacy. I tried and its prescription only here.

Maybe when the new village tropical opens i'll head that way and pick up some excel.  This is getting depressing. Im so jealous of EKs tank right now.
