  • Java Moss Out of Control!

I have Java Moss that since adding co2 to my taken has taken off. That's not the problem. The problem is that its everywhere. Literally, the intake strainer is full of loose JM every few days, I have it all tangled in my Dwarf Hair Grass and its attaching itself (AND growing) to my Tiger Lotus, Amazon Swords, AND Sagittaria.

Any suggestions to tame it, if not just get rid of it?

I got rid of it. The stuff grows like mad and like you said it get's into and onto everything in no time after triming it back.

It was like the Mexican Heather I planted in my flower beds a few years back. Stuff grew fast and wild and always had bees in it.

Yanked it out and put something else in it's place.

The only thing I can think of is to stay on top of trimming and cleaning or just removing it all.

Sell it and donate proceeds to the BOX.

Some other mosses are not as invasive as java moss. Christmas moss and Fessidens is slower growing and not as invasive.

Well, the problem I'm having is that I thought that I did remove it all once. Then once i added co2, it came back up on the areas of the wood where I had first tied it down.

I guess I could just rip it all out and then just try and stay on top of it. Is there anything that eats it?

I use java moss in my otherwise bare spawn tanks but it's still a pain to clean off the filters. I usually bleach the tanks and filters between spawns. I've been told that shrimp eat it but my shrimp usually get eaten before they can do the job.
                Anyone tried grass carp ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

What kind of shrimp would eat the Java Moss? Would Discus eat the shrimp?

discus would likely eat the shrimp.
my old pair of blue diamonds loved rcs.
i would think rcs, crs, and sulawesi would probably take care of jm, but the discus would likely take care of them to.

also, i never noticed my rcs in my 5.5g moss tank to eat the jm, they appeared to just be cleaning the algae and orginisms off of it.
                        maybe im wrong though.

Based upon my experiences, the shrimp that I've kept (RCS, CRS, yellows, amanos & cardinals) do not eat java moss. Rather, they feed off microorganisms on the java moss. Java moss actually provides a good place for shrimplets to grow up.

Hmmm... Well, thanks for all the replies. I'm gonna just try and get it all out, but I don't think I'm gonna have much success. Any suggestions as to how best remove JM from wood?
