    Re: Co2 recipes?

I have been syphoning CO2 from my 'homemade beer recipe' into my 75 gallon tank now for two years and trickling enough CO2 to create lush plants in my tank.  Here is the recipe and equipment you will need:

3 liter bottle or two 1 gallon plastic jugs (I use Gatorade jugs)
(double recipe if you use two jugs or more than one bottle or a very large jug)
    1-1/2 cups white sugar
    1 Tablespoon soy flour
    1-1/2 Tablespoons molasses
    1/2 teaspoon (generous) yeast

Fill jug up to line on bottle on about 4 inches or so below opening with WARM water.  Only WARM water will activate yeast.  Nevermind about expansion...  The water will soon cool and the yeast will become active.  Combine all ingredients and stir well.

    Equipment:

    silicone tubing
1/8" brass barb with thread (you can find at hardware store)
    rubber washer
    nut (for underneath)
    (1) small powerhead

Drill hole through middle of bottle cap using 3/16" drill bit.  insert theaded part of barb through hole and place washer and nut on top of cap.  You want a tight fit.  Screw cap tightly onto bottle and then connect tubing onto the bottle cap fixture and then onto powerhead, which you have already placed in the tank and affixed to back glass with suction cups.  Turn powerhead on and it should take a few hours before syphoning begins.  The CO2 will build up over your beer solution and syphon into the tank quickly and will last up to a month.  I always date my bottle with a dry erase marker so I will know when to change it out.  I also use a CO2 indicator in my tank. No need to use a regulator as there won't be enough CO2 output to worry with it.   I will soon post pics so you can see how lush my plants are.  Be sure and use a check valve in your line in case power goes off so that tank water will not drain back into bottle.  Hope this works for you and you experience lush plants too!
