When I was researching on how to plant it one site said you should plant it in .5 inch squares and some other sites said you should plant each stem one by one. Which way is the best to make a nice even carpet, or which ever one works best.)

How much time do you have?
Is the HC in a pot, or a bunch?
If it's in a pot, it might be more difficult, as it'd be best to remove all that (the term escapes me) greenish brown planting media in the pot. This can be pretty tedious if the roots are entangled in it.
Regardless, I'd separate as many individual plants as possible and plant them using tweezers, leaving spaces of about a half-inch to an inch between each plant.
The planting method you use can also depend on what kind of substrate you have. Sometimes the plants are so small that the regular-sized grains of substrates like AquaSoil are too big to hold the plants down before they gain a hold with their roots. If that's the case, it might be better to combine a few pieces of HC and plant them together."Millennium hand and shrimp!"

+1 HC is a pain due to it's size and the methode of planting that is successful. I ussually will separate and plant 3-5 peices at a time. If I have enough I leave 1/4"-1/2" spacing between each planting. Use tweezers, preferably very fine point and plant withthe tweezers at an angle so you can pull out away from the HC otherwise you will dislodge what you just planted.Houston Areas Aquatic Plant Society
