The Texas Legislature has directed TPWD to create a list of approved exotic aquatic plants that must be finalized by the end of the year. This list would include those exotic aquatic plants that could be legally sold and possessed in the state of Texas. The use of a list of approved plant species is a departure from the department’s present use of a list of prohibited species to restrict the importation and sale of certain non-native plants.
Staff are working with individuals and businesses that possess and sell vascular plants and we would like to begin discussions with those who possess and/or sell algae for biofuels, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, hobby aquarists, etc. We are especially interested in identifyingindividuals or companies who sell macroalgae for the marine (or freshwater) aquarium trade.
If you’re interested in being included in these discussions please contact me. We want to make sure that species currently being sold and do not pose a risk of invasiveness are included on the final approved or “white” list. Thanks.
