Treating New Plants to Avoid Unwanted Guests

I read somewhere a very brief mention about treating new (especially wild type) plants with Alum to eliminate parasites and unwanted introductions to your aquariums. Any further info such as what concentration solution to use and any other ways of achieving this result will be appreciated.
