Fertilization

I have two small planted tanks with no CO2. They have cherry shrimp, guppies, and snails. For plants I am primarily using java moss and hornworth. I don't have these "rooted" into the substrate. The plants are just kind of floating around.

Is there a powder or liquid fertilizer that I can safely use without harming the inhabitants? Is a fertilizer even necessary? The plants are generally green and don't seem to need any help but the fish tend to pick at them and they tend to be a little scrawny as a result.

Please give specific product names and a LFS that carries them.

For java moss and hornwort, you should be just fine without ferts. Unless you notice more problems than the fish picking at them. Could you post pictures of the plants? I'd like to see what you mean by "scrawny." But generally, those two plants don't tend to really need ferts. :)

How many watts of light do you have over each of the two tanks? What size are they?

One tank is right by a window and gets a good dose of light every day. The other tank is a Marineland 2.5 gallon. I have the light on during work hours, but I don't know the wattage.

By scrawny, I mean the fish peck at the java moss until only the main stems are left. I probably don't have a big enough piece in there.
