We just move into the new house a few weeks ago and theres a 48 in dual bulb light fixture hanging from the ceiling in the garage. We never use it. I dont know the wattage for it so what is the worse that would happen if i used a bulb rated higher than it

The worst thing that could happen is it causes the fixture to overheat, which ignites a flame, which start a large fire that engulfs your new house and eventually the neighborhood, the entire city . . .state . . . nation . . . and starts the beginning of the end of the world.
Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Find out what the length of the fixture is and then buy a T12 bulb that matches the length. Shoplights like what you probably have take regular fluorescent bulbs and the wattage is standard by length.135 gal Fahaka Puffer

Oh, don't worry, the fire department is great around here!....I live just a couple blocks away from you. My son tried the same experiment a few months ago. His light overheated and caught on fire, smoke detector came on and we called the fire department. I took the entire fixture, broke the glass lid of the tank it was on and stuck the entire fixture in the tank.....after we un-plugged it of course.
The fire department was there within, what seemed like, less than 5 minutes. So, don’t worry, even if you are not home and the fixture catches on fire, the fire department will most likely get to it before the entire house burns down.

Likely it uses F40 T12s or F32 T8s.
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
