    Re: planted - ph stabilization

With a planted tank I wouldn't gravel vac.....you will constantly be pulling nutrients out of the substrate where plants feed and into the water column where algae feeds.

The reason I don't think the petricola will like it is because they are a Tanganyika catfish and the water there is really hard and high in pH along with tons of other minerals that will be depleted in a planted tank. Also they tend to like it better in groups too and they do constantly move around. which  is probably why he is cruising with the cories.

A nice grass plant is lilaeopsis brasiliensis which City Pets has lots of. With any foreground plant though high light and ferts help...

Hrm - thaks for the petricola info - I'll likely relocate him.  I should have looked him up before now.  he's so cute tho - I couldn't pass him and his brother up (or sis and sister??).  Unfortunately his brother got too curious about the intake on the powerhead after a power outage.  The screen had slipped off it, and when the power came back on....  Well, let's just say I still get a lump in my throat thinking about it  :(.  Most of my other tanks run about 7.5-8 on the ph.  I'm about to set up more species specific arrangements.
