  • Local Moss!

Has anyone seen healthy looking java moss (or other moss capable of handling the ph and hardness of my African cichlid tank) at a LFS?

Looking to pick some up, but the specimens at Aquarium World looked a little... dead? lol

    Thanks!

I've got christmas moss, java moss, and several other types . . . but what type of cichlids do you have? Are you looking to buy some? If so, then I can move this to the appropriate forum for you?

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Another things to consider . . . most mosses thrive in cooler water conditions. What do you keep your tank at?

Tank is at ~8.2 and 80 degrees. If it won't work with those conditions, I understand. I've seen a few references saying that those specs would fall within the java moss' range.

I'm looking to buy some, but I suppose I'm also looking to make sure its appropriate for my conditions Move to whatever forum you feel necessary! Sorry if it was the wrong one!

        Thanks

These aren't ideal conditions for Java moss, but it is a pretty hardy plant. I'll give you some if you promise to report back what happens to it in your tank. PM me to set a pick up time.

            I appreciate it!

Current set up is Melanochromis auratus & Pseudotropheus sp.Acei.

I'm just up Shepherd, so quite close. Will PM you as soon as I figure out my schedule for the rest of the week.

I wasn't able to find much info on java (or any other moss) in cichlid setups with these water parameters, but since its essentially Houston tap water, it sounds like a good experiment I'll be sure to let everyone know how it turns out.

Do you think I'd benefit from some liquid fertilizer (aquarium variety...)? The aquarium is entirely hardscape right now.

Wouldn't worry about fert. just for moss. Why 80F? Seems a tad high for those two species.

I've been basing my water parameters off the Fish profiles listed on cichlid-forums.com. Shows 78-82F for both species, so i shot for the middle.

I see nothing wrong with the temperature. All of my tanks stay between 78-80 with no issues, from a view on the fish. Live plants I can't really speak on, but even when I had my live plant tank it was at 78.

I always kept my african tanks on the cool side, 75F or so...was just curious.

I was on an emergency tubing run (installed my inline heater, which promptly started leaking like crazy), and ended up buying a few pieces of java moss from Fish Gallery.

armthehomeless - I still really appreciate your offer I still promise to report back with how its handling the water!

My temp is between 84 and 86 and my java moss is growing back. I thought i lost it all because it didnt attach to my driftwood but its growing back pretty quickly now.
