  • CO2 Yeast method

*Homemade Yeast Methods; There are many ways to produce CO2 via the use
of yeast and sugars which includes a another method that utilizes Jell-O
    (Gelatin) for CO2 production.

With these yeast methods the traditional
method of diffusion utilizes air line tubing and a
    limewood
    air stone
or ceramic air stone and for even further/better diffusing of the
CO2, the limewood (or ceramic) air diffuser is placed inside a sponge (as
pictured in the Diffuser/Reactor Section following this section)
    This method
of diffusion can be used with the Jungle Fizz tabs too, although it generally
diffuses faster than with a traditional diffusion bell/chamber by the
    manufacturer

Further Information about the Gelatin Method
(Please note that I have NOT used this method but know of persons that have with
    both good a poor results):

    • Mix together 2 packs of Jell-O (any flavor, since the end result is CO2 and
nothing more) and 2 cups boiling water. Mix really well until it's all
      dissolved.
    • Add 1.5-2 cups sugar and mix well again.
    • Add 2 cups cold water and mix AGAIN. Make sure the sugar is dissolved and
not just collected at the bottom.
    • Pour the mixture into the bottle and stick it in the fridge overnight, until
      it actually turns to Jell-O.
    • Once the Jell-O has hardened, add one cup room temp/lukewarm water and 1/2
tsp yeast. More yeast will produce more CO2. I would suggest starting with 1/2
tsp. If you find that it's not enough, you can always open the bottle later and
      put in some more.

    Thank You!

Thank you so much! One of the guys at Fish Gallery, I think he's Aggsomebody on here, told me there was a really good DIY CO2 recipe on FB that used jello. I've been looking, but haven't been able to find it. This is like a Christmas present to me. Thanks again. Happy Holidays!

I posted my personal experiences of the gelatin yeast mix long time ago and used the big 4L hawaiin punch bottles, make several gelatin mixes and just add the yeast when ready.

With this you have several in rotation and never go through a down time. With the 4L bottles you can provide an extreme amount of co2 if your method of injection is good. I preferred tapping into the output nozzle or through the cheap ceramic/glass diffusers on ebay. The smaller micro size co2 bubbles dissolve easier into the water column.

The mix started off, oddly enough, exactly like the above that was posted by a memeber of another forum but the above poster states or leads to have one believe it's their own by the wording. Maybe it was a complete copy/paste with no credit to the origin but either way, the gelatin mix is a good recipe that I've personally tried and rec. to anyone planning on going the route of yeast co2.

To add to the set up, having another bottle between the output point and the yeast bottle as a liquid/gas separator keeps any foaming yeast from entering the tank.

Have the bottle partially filled with water
The hose from the yeast bottle inserted through the cap and into the bottle with it submerged below water level
A second hole in the cap for another hose leading to the output point but the end of this hose that's in the bottle near the top or above the water level

So what size tank is that formula rated for?

No more than a 30g tank. Even I think a 30g tank would need 2 bottles

So what should I do for my 55 gallon?

You could run double 4L bottles and it should keep up depending on your lighting/plants.

I was able to sustain high tech/high light 20g with a single 4L bottle.

Yes definatly. Just keep your lights on a timer if your gonna do this while dosing or your gonna grow algae instead of plants

i used to use unflavored clear gelatin from the baking isle but i am not sure that it is any better than jell-o. i also got really good results with wine yeast. it seems the two together made for a more consistent yield and a lesser co2 output spike. good idea on the entrainment separator jug EK, i wish that I had thought of that. i had one back up into a tank once. not pleasant. i started using airline check valves and those worked okay once some pressure built up.

What is the point of the jello? Does is provide a more steady CO2 output? I've been doing sugar water and have been satisfied with the results.

*slaps forehead. I need to make the gas/liquid separator. My tank is really cloudy and I had no idea why.

The jello or gelatin is the food ( so don't use sugar free lol) but since the sugar is suspended in a gel the yeast can't feed on it as quickly so the output is more constant with a lower peak
