Ek, do you know the scientific name for them ? I am trying to look them up on google and I am not getting much at all. I think I have a pair of them in my tank but I want to make sure. They look identical to what I see in his picture

Here is my newly planted tank... Take it easy on me, it's my first time
It's my 45 gallon Odyssea I just planted today... Brown ADA substrate. No fish yet, but plans for a couple dozen Cardinal Tetras and a Cory Cat or two to clean up the bottom. I'll add an O-cat when the need arises.
Looks nice, I would put the lotus in the back though cause it will start to shade the plants up front.
Another thing about AS, do water changes every day for about a week to help stabilize the ammonia spike/hardness drop. Houston water is really hard and AS does an excellent job at lower it but the fast change in water params might pose problems with sensitive plants like crypts and stuff. Make sure you test the water before adding any fish and with o-cats they are nice to have even if you don't need them!
Please pardon my ignorance, but what exactly should I be looking for in the water tests? pH only or a complete cycle. I got the plants from an individual in Houston, but they are now in College Station water. I honestly have never tested the pH of my water, or any levels for that matter...
I keep cichlids in several tanks, from 10 - 160 gallons and have a 20 gallon tetra/barb tank and have never tested any of them... As for the cycle, I 'cycled' two bags of bio media in my 35 gallon corner tank for about 5 days and moved them to the new tank when I set it up, along w/ using 90% water from my 160 gallon.
It will explain most of what you are asking about.
Goto your LFS in town and get either a 6 in 1 strip kit + the Ammonia tester strip kit or the Freshwater master kit. The master kit is a LOT more accurate and costs about the same as the two other kits combined. The master kit takes longer to process your results (about 10 minutes) where the strip kit you will have your answer in 1 minute.

Z,
I thought he was referring to pH. I am aware of the Nitrogen cycle and used to 'recite' it to customers daily when I worked in a LFS for about 3 years back in college... But that is why I 'cycled' bio media in my other tank to use in this one. I did the same basic thing with my 10 gallon nursery tanks a few weeks back as well. I shouldn't have to deal with a normal cycle since I already have established bacteria in the bio media.
Even if my tank is going to go through a 'mini-cycle', wouldn't fish help promote that anyway?
And for as many 'rules' as there are to fishkeeping that I always had to make customers aware of, I hardly ever followed any of them myself. I have never owned a test kit and would rarely do water changes on my 135 with wet/dry I used to have. I'm doing approximately 40% water changes a little more frequently, every 2-3 weeks on my 160, but because I just have two canister filters on it. I guess I have always been lucky.
