In my opinion, this is the key. Even in my NPT's where I was afraid of gassing off too much CO2, I found that things were better overall with some surface agitation (from a powerhead or filter, or whatever).

As to the main topic of the thread, I've never used an airstone for night aeration...at least not with planted tanks. I did use them years ago in fish-only tanks.

i have been using a powersweep with venturi at night and it is cleaning up the tank well. since nitrates rob and/or interfere with co2 saturation in the water column this is bound to help. i may try a propellor style pump if i can find an inexpensive one that oscillates on its own

well, im kind of new to all this but i did shut my hob filter and placed an airstone and i leave it on all day. i hvae seen my xmas moss to grow and my marine ball to like it. the shrimp stay away from the bubbles.

i am running an airstone all day in my shrimp tank too, it increases circulation to a lesser scale and i think the shrimp like well oxygenated water because they are much more active now. of course that means its pointless to run co2 in that tank with an airstone so maybe i stick to low tech plants

well i shut the filter because of the shrimplets would get sucked in. and right now i cant vacum

buy a sponge prefilter for the end of your intake tube, thats what i did to mine and it works like a charm to protect shrimp

My filter is internal. It has the intakes on the botton and on the side. No spngoe can coer it. I need to get a sponge filter but little money tight rig now.

I run the airstone 24/7 as well cause I'm more concerned with my fauna than the flora, its a thin line trying to do both.

Put some panty hose over it.

Yeah it was sucking the fabric in that little filter is to strong
