Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

yes i too agree with the seperating, gives their roots a little more room to spread and makes it so the leaves arent all competing over same light. but im not a big fertilizer user (just my opinion i know a lot of people have great success with them) im just not a high tech plant keeper really.

        Re: plant suggestions

ok i took all of your advise and separated the crypt lucen bunches - there are 9 plants (some big some few stems), i put them all over the back and side of the tank, i also went to lfs and went overboard and bought 5 little java ferns, 2 big nana's, and 1 small nana, and decided to put the bogwood in the tank that i have been boiling for the last 5 days (its a mopani - its beautiful), so far (14hours) it has not made the water look tea color, it was doing that intensely when i was boiling it, here are some pictures

55 gallon - AGA standard - mix cichlid

That looks really nice!  The mopani bogwood as you say is indeed beautiful and it really sets the tank off - providing nice contrast to both plants and substrate.  Where did you find it?

                Re: plant suggestions

Nope, don't sit back just yet....

The anubias has to be reset. Gently pull each out of the substrate until the rhizome (the stem with roots emerging) is 1/2" above the substrate. If that is submerged, it will not do well. I know it was packed into a little basket for sale, but ou must pull it free of the packing and keep that rhizome above the surface. Not touching, but 1/2" above. That may mean that you'll want to move some to the back of rocks or wood if that looks bad to you.

Looks like you've tied the java ferns to the rocks or wood, that is correct.

The crypt looks great, it will fill in nicely and I think you have a good start on this tank. The  crypts will love root frertilizers.

                  Re: plant suggestions

thanks guys, i got the mopani from a petco, i was browsing and the shape and size of this one was very attractive to me, it was $10.99, they had two huge pieces (too large for my tank)

the small anubias is actually attached to the bogwood (see new attached pix), the two large ones - i just put the rocks on top of their roots, i did not put the roots down in the substrate, just touching the substrate, the rhizome is actually not completely touching the substrate, just part of it barely touching the substrate, please see the two new pictures and let me know if you you think i should still try to pull it away more

thanks again, i appreciate the help and feedback, i am so excited to see how they all turn out, fyi - all the java ferns are attached to the wood

Looks good, I saw the previous pictures and the rhizomes all looked above the substrate so your set!

                        Re: plant suggestions

As long as it is not burried you are probably fine. I observe that mine tend to grow away from the substrate until they are at 1/2" so I suspect that is what they prefer, but as long as it is not burried they won't rot.

                        It looks great.

You are going to love it as it fills in. Be prepared for some changes in the plants as they adjust to the new situation. Different lighting, ferts, and CO2 levels may temporarily upset them, old leaves may need to be shed for new leaves in some cases. It wil pass.

thanks for the encouragement, i can't wait either to see the crypts established, the ferns and the small nana root into the bogwood and the larger nana's to send new leafs, i guess i just have to be patient!
