Love the pics, esp of the emperors! One of my favorite tetras of all. Nice job!

Btw, have your barbs ever messed with your plants? I had albino barbs absolutely SHRED my HC within an hour of being in the tank. :(

No I've never noticed them damaging plants.. I want them to breed! Im have some longfin cherry barbs in there too. I might try to crossbreed them in my new tank... Longfin albino cherry barbs???! Hopefully. The emperor and diamond tetras breed in my tank. I used to feed frozen daphnia everyday in case there are babies hiding in the plants... Need to get some more though. Ya one of my emperors looks like he is getting dropsy :( he is pretty old though. I love how emperor males have blue eyes and females have green eyes! Did you know that?!?

The substrate is ecocomplete and florabase mixed and its pretty deep. Three or four bags? Of ecocomplete plus one bag florabase. Also about 20 pounds of fine grain aquarium gravel. I mixed the gravel with enough dirt from the back yard to make a muddy slush, maybe 5 pounds? Then put ecocomplete on top, then dumped a bag of florabase in and mixed it just into the top couple inches. It's 2 inches deep in the front and 3-5 inches deep along the back. I also put organic "mater magic" (for tomatoes!) Pellets deep in the substrate under plants that are heavy root feeders as needed. The light is a SunBlaze 48inch t5 ho that cost 160 plus tax brand new from the hydroponics store and imo its better then any comparable light "made for aquariums" because it has better reflectors, is just as wide as my 55 gallon and the bulbs are not covered by anything. There is nothing but air between the bulb and the water! This means more light gets to the plants, the bulbs run cooler and this means they last much longer :) from front to back the bulbs are 10,000k, 3000k, 5000k, and 6500k.

another good DIY type root suppliment are the small Jobes tree and shrub sticks, very cool scape! Have you tried the SHO spiral compacts that are starting to get around the hydro stores online? i dont know of any local stores that are open anymore :(

I'm going to buy one next payday! 125 watts, 8000 lumens, for $65 brand new! That includes everything except for the hangers.
