Most planted tank hobbyists I know of like to collect in the wild, from time to time. The difficulty in this is that it can be hard to find quality places to collect during a decent season where aquatic plants are still submerged and have not set seed (thus beginning the end of the life cycle for annuals and making perennials difficult to convert back to submersed conditions). Another difficulty is knowing which plants are which, which are fully aquatic, and which only look good in nature, but will quickly die in the home aquarium.
The solution? Find a group that knows plants fairly well (not only ID, but which ones are suited to our hobby)and go on a collection trip together to places that will yield plants in a state that they can survive in your tank!
Now, of coarse the questions come up..."Just what such groups are out there? And when do they go collecting?" Well, I'm glad you asked! There is just such a Field Trip planned for June 9th to the bountiful (and beautiful) San Marcos River. Please visit the HAAPS sub-forum on HoustonFishBox for more details. (You can click the link in my signature to go directly there.)
Oh, and to keep this thread from sounding too much like an advertisement, I will be happy to relate any information I can find or that I may know related to wild plant collecting.
