  • if they came from bikeguru then they are amanos, he keeps them outside and I think it's the diet/elements/etc that are giving them the color.

I wouldn't have used that substrate if you plan on going with the more delicate fish/shrimp unless it's specific to what the water params and what that substrate will buffer to.

if it has been pointed out then nvm, I didn't read the whole thread.

    • When I first picked them up from Bikeguru a lot of them were blue, red, green, yellow, and a dark brown. He keeps them in several outdoor ponds. After sitting in the tank for a little while, most of them turned tan or dark brown.

Nothing delicate. Only hardy livestock and plants.

      • Here's a somewhat better video with the lamp off and just LEDs.

        • Regardless, that substrate is eco-complete but cichlid substrate so it buffers the pH high.

              • So I've heard. Them along with O cats and nerites. I haven't had an outbreak of algae yet, and I'm hoping I won't. Will be packing this tank with a lot of plants eventually.

Slowly increased how long I have the lamp on. The lamp is on about 12 hours a day now, but I keep the LEDs on for longer. This will change after it's completely set up.

                • Amano along with flagfish and SAE are the only few that eat hair and BBA.
12 hours of light per day can be a bit much. I used to have my tank with 12 hours of light/day, I ended up with algae outbreak, so right now I decreased it down to 9-10 hours. My oto cats aren't keeping up with the algae growth, I don't even feed them extra veggies anymore, as they have more algae to eat than they ever can.

                  • I don't feed much so there isn't much for the algae to grow on. All the livestock are eating bio-film and whatever junk is in there. I want to keep it at 12hrs, but if algae starts to grow, I'll lower it.

                    • yeah just be careful I guess, I feed my tank only once every two days, algae tends to be very persevere and grow in any conditions. But since you have amano shrimps I supposed it'll be controlled to a good extent.

                      • Well, I've been told packing the tank with plants will choke out the algae, so I'm planning on doing so. I've decided on the midground plants (crypt wendtii green, red, brown). Now I just need to pick out the foreground and background plants. Also need to decide what to attach to the dw that won't take away from the whole setup. I've been piling up my list with plants I've found that work well in low/med light setups without CO2. I still haven't actually looked at them or even read up anything about them, but I have plenty of time.

                        • water wisteria for the background is great, it'll fill up your background in no time, just keep cutting them and replant into the gravel, newly formed wisteria looks bushy and bright green. I cover my drift wood with javamoss, after 6 weeks it's already took over. most foreground plants tends to be medium to high light, or you can just grow java moss as a carpet and that'll become your foreground plants, dwarf hairgrass is nice too imo, but from my experience, pruning time for hair grass is a bit messy.

I was actually looking for wisteria at one point. It looks nice. I'm thinking some kind of stem plant or tall thin plants bunched together to make a wall. For the foreground I don't want to use dhg or the moss. I have a list I need to sort out
