Cutting Hairgrass Foreground?

I have got to do some cutting on my hairgrass forground. Last I recall, the best way is just to cut like you would mow a lawn. But does eveyone cut the entire colony at once, or does anyone cut half one week, and the other half the next? If so, does this help with potential algae outbreaks as the plant heals? The last time I had hairgrass, I remember cutting it all at once...and fighting GSA for a couple weeks afterwards every time.
