Hello, This is dan from HAW. Suggestion... Add substrate conducive to plant growth. Regards to Co2. Its best to have a source of Co2. Its the basic principle to photosynthesis where plants take up carbon dioxide and light to convert the fertilizer in the substrate and the water column to chlorophyll and take as food. The plant then expel oxygen as waste. JMHO .respectfully Dan ... Come by sometime and i can better explain it.. plus i have a nice variety of plants
co2 is debatable. best way to sum it up is that with it, amazing results can be obtained. it is not, however, necessary. fish produce small amounts naturally during respiration. bottom line, the plants grow without it, but grow like crazy with it. yes, i'm in missouri city.
my fish house: 2.5g- ramshorn hatchery 6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails 29g- geo grow-out, angels, 12"fire eel, dwarf frog, apple snails 45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers
75g- 2 oscars, parrot, silver dollars, albino channel cat, syno euptera, bichir, baby jaguar, convicts, yabby 125g- fahaka puffer, rainbow shark
and about a dozen bettas....
they produced co2 but more ammonia through respiration. The Co2 coming from fish is not enough. The primary product of fish metabolism is ammonia, not carbon dioxide. biological filtration only deals with nitrogen products, so it doesn't help make co2 in any way. Their respiration results in more nitrate through the nitrogen cycle. Which the major cause of algae if you dont change water. Without Co2 injection, the plants gets very little through the fish. in our water they need approximately 19 ppm for the plant to thrive by our KH. Plants without CO2 is basically starving. they are unable to convert the nutrients in the water and soil to chlorophyll which they take up as food. Plants naturally puts out CO2 when the lights are out but not enough. JMHO
My plants don't seem to be starving. Although, I do agree CO2 makes one helluva difference, but it isn't necessary. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner unless you're doing a flora only tank just so you get the hang of how to upkeep a planted tank. Then, when you think you're ready, you can try CO2. JMHO
