  • My war with the green blob.

So I've been battling this green fluffy thing for the past 2 months. I would win the battle and then it would come back for revenge, anybody have any idea what this thing is? I've treated this tank with everything I could think of, from stopping CO2, pouring in hydrogen peroxide, amano shrimp and nerite army, water change, stopping the light, and other dumb methods but to no avail. If you have any ideas on treating this thing, let me know.

I'd like to say that I follow the EI method of dosing. Some people do not find that it suits their ideas of an aquarium and that is all well and good as long as their aquarium looks okay for them, and the livestock is healthy.

That being said, I'd like to know more about your tank. How many gallons? What kind of light are you using and for how long? What type of co2 are you using? and last but not least, what ferts are you using and how often?

Is there enough water flow so that stuff doesn't develop that's my idea . Maybe try vacuuming it out during a wc ?

I am using my pair of glass lily pipes. Maybe I should switch it out or run a stronger pump? I tried vacuuming, it pulls everything out along with it.

Try airline tubing or a toothbrush (twirling it around the head of the toothbrush).

How long has the tank been running? It would seem to me that your tank is limited on something and the other resources available allowed the algae to take over. Have you checked any parameters?

                  Let me provide more information.
Tank was established 3 months ago.
                  Substrate is Amazonia.
                  Rocks are Seiryuu Stones.
I had 8 Amano shrimps in there, they mowed everything down and soon after that, they stopped and died.
I had nerites, they died after they got entangled in the blob.
I twirled it with my algae brushes, it's not hair like, so it just breaks apart.
It catches on my pleco's gills, almost strangling it to death.

I might try something else out. I'm going to start dosing dry ferts and see if it'll do anything.

I would try to figure out what it is before dosing dry ferts. Dosing dry ferts could just make it grow faster.

Uv light ? Its worth a shot they sell those ones at like petsmart and petco for around 50 or so. Said uv helps with algea issues. I run one one each of my bigger tanks and i hardly ever see green algae growth!

Haven't tried UV yet. I have one in storage and almost forgot about it. I'll try and see if it'll work.

I had a feeling it was this, but I didn't want to say because I've never had cyano in freshwater. Adding ferts would've fed it even more.

Nope, no ferts added. I got some meds from Bill in LaPorte that'll kill them. Let's hope it works. For now, lights are going to be completely off.
