Hi all! I have an itty bitty planted setup with mopani wood in it. I was glad that it was leeching tannins because I like the look of tannin filled water, it looks nice and natural, plus the pH at my house is too high and the tannins might reduce it a little.
I also use Purigen in my filter though because it's always been my favorite, it works wonders with cleaning and removing harmful substances. However, it also removes tannins.
Are there any really good filter media like Purigen that would keep my water healthy without taking all the tannins out? I don't want my water crazy brown, I could always toss the Purigen back in when needed if it's too dark or too acidic, but as it is, the water gets clearer every single day. If you have ideas about how I can get the pH a bit lower and keep it that way (I have some pH Down but I would love if something could get it down to maybe 6.8 and keep it there), that would be awesome too.
Just for the tank parameters:
5 gallon
3 corycats, 2 stiphodon gobies, and ??? ghost shrimp (I know it's too small, I'm working on getting a 20 long setup but it works for now.)
Soft sand substrate, will be changed to a plant-specific substrate topped with sand once I move to the 20 long
pH is generally around 7.4 to 7.6, which is too high for the corycats
Temp 76-78 degrees
Planted with various java ferns, anubias, marimo, and growing java moss
Dose with Flourish Comprehensive and API CO2 Boost at half the recommended dosages
