Haven't posted in a while but the 10 Gal. tank us just about ending it's cycle. I saw the amonia jump followed by the nitrate spike and now some decent nitrate readings.
Lost some cherry shrimps and some ghost but overall the tank is holding well, noticed some browning on the leaves and some algae but it quickly dissappeared after some water changes. The 5 Zebra Danios are taking the cycle rather well and I've added a German Ram and he is doing rather well and loving the plants. I've also done my first pruning of the Java Fern new leaves and attached them to the branch on the hardscape. I should start ordering the parts for the 75 Gal. by the end of the month.uploadfromtaptalk1447081869329.jpguploadfromtaptalk1447081885509.jpguploadfromtaptalk1447081901630.jpguploadfromtaptalk1447081922277.jpg

Looking great, water changes and using a siesta period mid day is effective for many nuisance algaes. Have a feeling that Ram might make short work of your shrimp though. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Im thinking you may be right, I had 5 ghost and I've only been able to locate 2. I've seen him interact with the remaining 2 and noticed he doesn't bother them but then again they are over 1/2 long so the respect each other. The Danios does well with the Danios even while their all getting fed. But the Danios will go to the 75 gal. for the in fish cycle of that tank and I will get a female for the Ram to give him some company.

Most stems in low tech systems lose their lower leaves, as with a lot of their strong red coloration. Increasing your light intensity can help, but the trade off is dealing with algaes. Really simply topping them and even leaving the old stems in (they will grow new leaves and create a stronger bush effect) is the best option for most low tech stems. Rams are tricky, They can do ok with some larger amano shrimp, but they are great little hunters of ghost shrimp and cherries. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
