  • Inexpensive substrate for a 55 gallon tank

Hey guys, I need some ideas for an inexpensive substrate for my freshwater tank. From the research I have done on the subject it seems like I will need around 80lbs to do it. That way I can make some high and low spots in the tank. I plan on getting it going with live plants (haven't really researched what plants or fish I want yet) and finishing it off in a month or two with fish. I'm hoping for black, but beggars can't be choosers. Thanks for your help.

Black diamond blasting sand from northern tool is cheep I use it in my Geo tank. Never had plants in it. I use pool filter sand in my planted tank.

Where is the best place to buy pool sand? I am actually curious myself. Never used it before

The last time I got any was 5 or 6 years ago but it was like $15.00 for a 50lb bag.

Troy do you have to wash the Leslie's pool filter sand before you use it?

50lb PFS at Leslie run for about $10. You will need to rinse it really well before putting in tank. Use a 5gallon bucket and put in about 1/4 bag. Stick a hose in the bucket and let water run until it clear.
