I posted this on the HAAPS facebook page, and wanted to share it here as well. I've been out of the planted tank hobby for some time now, but I do still like to plants in glass cages and see what I can do to grow them. That any of these even survived is a miracle, because they were essentially neglected for 2-3 years.
"Dave Manthei's "paludarium". In mid-late 2012, this tank was a densely planted scape of Anubias and Cryptocoryne wendtii (red and brown). and a few stem plants for texture. The rocks are an iron-rich red-stained quartz combination that Kevin Christy collected. About 3 years ago I drained it completely, leaving only an inch of water, and covered the top with plastic wrap. (Life got busy.)
About 6 months ago, I chopped out 99% of the Crypts and at least 60% of the Anubias.... I turned off the light and "walked away" from it, but left the plastic cover so that any surviving plants would have a chance. But is was essentially a rock scape with a few bits of green. This past week, my daughters caught some tadpoles and asked me to raise them in here. So, I put the light back on and added an extra inch of water. The plants had grown quite a bit, but you'll notice that my Crypts are not "red" (yet) because they had so little light and were growing emersed all this time.
Have a look!"
