You might also consider 2 -3 tanganykan julidochromis dickfeldi, the smallest of the Tanganykan julis I believe.... They don't get larger than 3". There are better experts on these fish than I and may say even 2-3 wouldn't do well in a small tank. But if they can, it might not be a bad choice. Their natural environment is similar to your neat aquascape.
