Re: my first ADA 120P planted tank journal

thanks guys, i have shrimp in my wishlist, i already have it pretty well stocked, between the 4 cories, 2 loaches, and 5 ottos all the left over food and all the algae are getting eaten, i don't want to throw off the current "balance", plus i want to plants to grow in a little more - maybe another 6 to 8 weeks and then add anything else, i am afraid that any shrimp will be good snack for my angels!

on another front - my checkerboard female that spawned lost all of her eggs after 1.5 days, i think she also got nervous and ate some of them, but i was not expecting them to last (specially since it is her first spawn), but interestingly the other female spawned on the exact same leaf with the dominant male, so now i have another clutch of eggs from the other female on the same leaf and its the same drama, she was fine with him until he fertilized, now he or anyone else is not allwed in the vicinity!

j-ws6, thanks, its not necessarily better, but interesting for sure :)

i've been out of town for work the last few days, got back in this evening, and guess what?  my angels just did it, they spawned for the first time, with so many mouths i am sure the eggs won't last that long, but its fun for the time it exists, here's pix

        from a little far

a little farther - now you can see all the patroling hungry mouths, the checkerboards are the biggest culprits along with the danio, the checkerboard females are very small and they sneak in a get the eggs before the much larger and awkward moving angels realize, but they are trying their best to keep the eggs

i am just happy they spawned at all, i wish i had time to actually breed this pair, they are both very nice specimens - body structure, finnage, koi color/marbeling is perfect

              Its a beautiful site :)
I am thinking that you must have set that tank up perfectly because you are having spawnings left and right :)

thanks guys, i wish i knew what made them all get in the mood, wish i knew so i can repeat, there are still a few eggs left, but they get distracted during feeding time and other fish take full advantage of that

i had to return wall-e and eva because they were fin nipping persistently :(

Hey Finfan do you know if Wall-e & Eva went into Dan's plant tanks up front?  My Girlfriend bought
those two and if they were yours I will make sure they keep their names!  She was going to name
                      them Puff Daddy and Chutney!

jeff, when i took them back, i put them in the large planted tank in the back, but i think he was going to move them (not sure where), so it is possible the one's u got are them, if you guys like the names, absolutely call them wall-e & eva

Finfan, I suggest you move your lily pipe location.  You are losing a lot of flow the way you have them set in the back.  The water is just pushing off the front glass.  You are going to have a lot of deadspots on the right side of your tank.  You should move them to the side and let the outflow push water through the tank sideways.  Unless you are planning on putting another filter on the right side?  Anyways, tank looks great!  Congrats on all the spawning.

screen, thanks for the suggestion and compliment, you are right, i also thought about dead spots on the right side of the tank and have been contemplating how to address that, yesterday i actually moved the outflow lily to the left of the tank, now the outflow flows the entire length of the tank and hopefully is creating a better flow throughout the tank, i don't currently plan on adding another filter because this one should be ok since it is rated for 175gallon and i have a 65gallon tank, but maybe in the future!  I left the inflow pretty much at the same spot thinking hopefully since the outflow blows the water across, the water will be forced to move around and come back towards the inflow - but that logic might be completely flawed!

another thing, i try to do a water change every 3 or 4 days, but in between after a day or so of water change a thin whitish scumish film develops on the water surface, it does not seem to harm anything, but is disgusting looking and it almost seems like it creates a barrier between the water and air contact (i am sure it reduces oxygen exchange), other than moving the outflow up to break the water, is there any other way to prevent this, i really don't like the sound of the outflow when raised or the way it looks, someone please help

How about using a powerhead pointed towards the top to give it a ripple effect across your tank. Would that work?
