    Re: uv sterilizer

Using a UV sterilizer in a planted tank will keep certain
algaes @ bay but not really for hair algae. I use one in a planted tank
not really for any algae probs, but more for diseases in the tank.
How heavily planted is your tank?

Any self respecting LFS should have excel.

Not hair algae... But Black Beard Algae... The black stuff that grows in tufts

I only use UV when there is a massive outbreak of greenwater. Otherwise, it is not really needed. But no harm having it on.

        not 100%

cut as much off as you can.  increase co2 via regulator and add excel.

what color is the hair algae? How long is it growing?

          It will is administered accordingly.

I have used excel on most algae with great results but then again excel was not the only factor.

agreed, excel is not the end all in the fight against algae.

You really have to find that right balance, and with every tank set up there is a different balance.  Only way to find said balance is by trial and error.

            However, excel does help.
