  • Can a CO2 fire extinguisher be converted?

It seems fire extinguishers are everywhere and near cheap.  Can these be emptied and filled with co2 gas for a planted tank?

Anything is possible but for the cost of the tank, and the fittings to convert.... Man a ten pound bottle of C02 is only a hundred bucks..

Gah, I don't have a phone book right now and can't remember the exact name to google it.

If someone has a houston yellow pages look up something like "The Oxy Acetl company" they are off of westpark. I bought my 10 pound bottle filled for like 125 after taxes. 5 pound bottles were 95ish after taxes.

15 bucks to refill. I'll keep looking till I get their number.

Bleh, I went and looked at the bottle, it's the acetylene oxygen company but didn't have a phone number.

I've got a red sea pro c02 kit on the side in the bag.. really you can pick up all that for less than three bills if you find someone who doesn't use theirs anymore and 10 lb's of c02 will last a very very very very very long time man. It will definately pay off fast plus it's easy to fill, can you imagine dropping a fire extinguisher off with someone asking them to fill it? They are going to look at you like your nuts.

Now a c02 bottle from a coke machine.... possible. but again, for the price.. may as well just go with one of these.

Cheaper to just buy one.....most places will not replace it for you and even then it would be pretty costly.

I'll make a call to a fire safety company I know on Monday and see what they say.  Thanks for the response.

I did the same thing yesterday. But I won't admit it, I just played it as I knew it was next Monday.

I would just buy a new one......i got my 10pd from 70 bucks...can't remember the place but I'm sure EK remembers.

Some places don't fill old bottles because they have to be pressured tested.  I found this out the hard way........it's a long story and I dont want to high jack your tread.

My Brother, the FireChief, told me that he did not think they add anything to the CO2 extinguishers
and that there are several places that refill extinguishers.   One in Galveston: A1 Fire Extinguisher Co.
Give them a call and see if they think we're all crazy
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
