  • Filtration question

So I hooked up my Eheim to a lilly pipe last night to get ready for my CO2 system that I am getting. My problem is when I woke up this morning it must not be aerating the water enough because one fish died and the others were at the top gasping. So I hurried and threw on my HOB that I had on before and in about 15 minutes everything was almost back to normal. I dont know if it is lack of plants in the tank since I havent really aquascaped waiting till I get the CO2 system but I can not have the HOB on their with the CO2 as I do not want to stir up the water to much and loose the usefulness of the CO2 system. What do I need to do?

The Eheim is a Ecco 2232 I believe on a 29G tank. There are a small blanket of the plants I got at the auction along with two others that I can not remember the name of. I brought the pipe up just enough to allow air into the bowl

You are suppose to bring it up where the output at the end of the bell breaks water surface.

Also think that filter is kinda small.

Gotta keep in mind that plants will consume o2 at night.

Eheim 2232 flows 127 GPH and rated for up to 35 gallons.

I would not rate this filter for that much.  On a non-cichlid tank, 5X turnover is typical standard filtration.

That would be like a 25 gallon tank.

I'm using a 2232 in my 30cube(like 7+ gallons) and still thing maybe could use more,
W/ my aeration issue in this tank, simply raising the lily pipe was not good enough. So I
attached a small microbubbler w/ pump to a timer and set it to click
              on after lights out.

actually I looked it is a 2233 but I can not seem to find anyone that carries it to determine what the output is. But I would think I should be fine I talked to Dan yesterday and he can not think of what is going on because he doesnt have very much agitation of his water and he says all is fish are fine.

                  Re: Filtration question

I tried it again yesterday. I turned off the HOB at about 5 or 6 and when I went to check on them at 10 or so they were gasping. I just dont get it the tank is only 29G I saw Dans and he doesnt have a huge system set up on his and he even said that he can go a day or two with no pump running. I checked the chemical levels and all are at 0 or next to it. And if it were from high levels of something I would think they would be gasping even with the HOB running.

                    Re: Filtration question

you said it is a 29 gallon tank, what about the fish? how many, what type? how big?

the more larger fish in it the faster they'll use the available O2

                      Re: Filtration question

two discus, 1 angle, and 5 black neons. The discus are about 3" and the angle is about 4" fin to fin. So there isnt an abundant amount of fish it almost looks like there is nothing in there.

Hate to break this to you Darbex, but I think that tank is too small for what you have stocked. If those discus reach adult size it will be too small for just them.

Two discus in a 29 is to much? The angle needed a place to stay until I get the other tank running. Full grown they are 8"

Should I add an air pump to the tank? But will that mess up the CO2 system?
