    Re: Filtration question

I'm not a big planted tank guy,

but my understanding is that any bubblers or anything that causes water surface movement will lower the CO2 levels...

maybe your running the CO2 too high right now? have you tried turning it down?

        Re: Filtration question

what you should do is run an aerotaror during the night because plants us co2 during the day and o2 at night and screenname is selling a diffuser for 40 which is a good deal hit him up about that also the discus will not grow due to the amount of organics in the water when you use soil plus alot of plants it stunts there growth so they should stay very close to that size ...how long has the tank been running?

            Re: Filtration question

The tank has been running for about a month and a half but about 2 weeks with fish. I guess I will have to see how they fair during the day with no HOB because thinking about it I never tried that it is usually in the evening. I just dont see how the canister I am running is to small since my tank is 29G. It has to be the night thing. I need to go to the store and pick up some ocats. What are the nerites?

I completely disagree with this statement. The last batch of juvies I raised out grew from 2" to 7" in a very heavily planted 125 gallon tank. I agree that heavy DOCs in the water will stunt discus growth, but water changes will keep those managed. Several things will cause stunting, but if the water is changed often enough and the discus are kept warm and fed sufficiently with a good diet, they will grow to adult size in Darbex's 29 gallon. I just happen to feel that his tank is too small for two full-grown discus. Some breeders keep pairs in a 29 but most I know use a 40 breeder. Throw in the rest of the fish he has stocked in his 29 and I believe his tank is overstocked, which could be a big part of his O2 depletion problem. Just my 2 pennies.

                    Re: Filtration question

In the end I plan on getting a 210 or so for the discus so I am not worried about that at the moment. But the tank can not be overstocked at the moment there is not enough fish in there. I had a 125G stocked with about 25-30 Africans and had no problems.

No need for apologies, Schance. I wasn't offended in the least. I've heard this arguement before at simply discus and other forums. I just happen to disagree. While it is much easier to grow discus to adult size in a bare bottom tank, it is entirely doable in a planted set up. The proof lives in my 125. The turq in my av was raised in the planted 125 and is larger than the wild-caught blue and Tefe Greens that live in the same tank.
