  • 2.5 betta planted

So, I got a couple beautiful bettas from PhishPhreek this weekend and put them in their 1g bowls.  Karen (my partner) reminded me that we had a couple 2.5g in the garage from her clown breeding days so I'm going to clean them up good, slap on nano filters and put some low light low care plants in there.  I need some ideas for CHEAP lights for these tanks, maybe some type of desk lamp?

The next question is would the bio load be too much if I added a niger otto to each tank?  I'd like to have them in to help a bit with algae.

Go to Ikea.... there's a ton of super nice lamps for $20 or less.

If you change the water every week, the bio load is not a problem.
If not, you need to test the water as it cycles to keep an eye on the amonia level.

As long as they are in the bowls the water will be changed every week.  I'm hoping once the 2.5 is cycled I will only have to change the water once every couple of weeks since it will have a filter on it.

stability is pretty tough to achieve in such a small tank.  2.5g is ok for a betta (better than a petstore cup!) but too small of a tank to hope to easily create a constant and "balanced" system that can promote a long happy life in most other fishies.

another source for lamps is frys, they have a nice circular fluorescent clamp lamp somewhere along that long check-out line for $15 iirc.

As long as the filter has plenty of surface area for the nitrifying bacteria to hangout, they will handle a steady bio load.  The problem with small tanks is that it takes a smaller change in organic matter to upset the balance.  So try to feed the same amount every day.

I got a spring clamp light and a 6700k spiral fluorescent bulb both from walmart.  Works great for my little 3 gallon planted tank.

if you look at the fine print on the packaging for most normal spiral fluorescent bulbs it will have the K rating for the bulb.

If you go to Home Depot, and look at their table lamp section, there should be a gray desk lamp by Hampton Bay for about 20-30 bucks.  It's got a 27w daylight PC bulb in it.  It's a great little lamp, I'm using it over my 5.5 gallon planted tank.  You'll be able to grow pretty much anything you want with it.
