I have the Takifugu ocellatus. - FUGU PUFFER
I did throw some salt in his tank when I first got him...but I never kept it up. I was told just to keep him happy and if he acted ill to put some more salt in... he never did and I never did.
When he first arrived at my house he was a skinny marble with eyeballs and a tail. I quickly fattened him up... and moved him from a 10 gallon tank to a 20. He has been in the 20 for about a year. He is about 4" long...swims in and out of a stone teepee and a tree branch that is in his tank... and burrows in the sand, pebble substrate.
I am reading now that they rarely survive in home aquaria and require brackish to saltwater type conditions.
Do I try to revamp his home... aka change to brackish?
He is very fat and happy.... he has never puffed... he lets me scoop him up in the water to check him out periodically.. he eats as if there is no tomorrow. I use my planted tank to grow him the spirally snails...(the longer ones). Every so often I buy 30ish rosies from petco and he finishes them within a day and a half... then I don't feed him again for a few days lol. Everything i have done has been trial and error. He loves bloodworms and brine shrimp... the water in the tank goes with the seasons. When it was hot this summer, his water was 80ish... when it cools off so does his water... but slowly. -I read they need a chiller in their tank to keep it cool.
Maybe he is doing okay despite my ignorance...
My water has a hardness of 8... ph is about 8... no chlorine (well water). Temp varies from 70 to 80 depending on season and if I am on vacation.
I have 6 tanks of fish... am I doing tank a disservice?
