  • Can pea puffers live with half beaks?

    After doing some reading and researching a little on pygmy pufferfish I did not see anything on halfbeaks being good tankmates. Is this because they are not good tankmates?
    I also know that the fish store I got them from does not keep true brackish water. I would like to creat that Enviroment for them but what is the best way of doing so? Salt dosage per day/week or during weekly w/c?
    Current ten gallon stock;
    Three pea puffers
    Three bumble bee gobys
    One halfbeak
    The tank is planted with;
    Roleta(sp)
    Anubis
    Dwarf swords
    Brazilian penny wort

    My understanding is most of these plants will take salt. I also plan on introducing some mangrove I have been growing in freshwater.

    Please advise I am looking for some input. Thank you in advance.

    If the peapuffers dont have a ton of space, they will eat the halfbeaks. I would say 55+, you would be fine. If it's smaller, the pea puffers are going to get territorial and nip the fins on anything else they are with.

    Endlers
    gobies
    lots of nanos

        Not an expert by any means, but I think Pea puffers are fresh and the bumble gobies are brackish. Maybe some has some experience with the peas in brackish, but I have never heard of the bumble bee gobies in fresh. I have had success with introducing pea puffers to community tanks, but I always put them last and do not reccomend small non-schooling swimming fish.

          Pea puffers just do better in freshwater with no salt, I've used 1 tbs per 5 gal aquarium salt in a pea puffer set up with no problem, but if they ever get ich I don't think they may tolerate more salt. If your half beak is eating you've it made, just make sure the tank is full of plants and since half beak stay on top more than likely he won't be noticed. Those gobies I heard can be kept in fw but just do better in brakish

            So far my pea puffers have taken to the salt, left the halfbeak alone, and the gobies are just doing their thing. These puffers are great they are very interactive, and curious. Within the first 24 hours they got rid of one of the puffers leaving me with two puffers. But the equation works out better this way(two puffers in a ten gallon).
            Electricblue are you using aquarium salt? or marine salt? I do not think the marine salt effects the tolerance of aquarium salt. I may be wrong that is an interesting point. I try to stay away from the aquarium salt I go more toward dips.

            I am working to get around around 1-2 tablespoons of marine salt per gallon of water or a specific gravity of 1.005-1.010.
            I am currently still in the acclimation phase.
