When your nitrates are going up so high that you are having to do daily 100% water changes.
If you keep just the Mbu alone in the tank you might be able to get away with a 500 gallon. I've never kept one so I don't have much experience with them. But the stories I've heard were not good with smaller tanks. One story was about someone that had a Mbu in a 110 gallon whose nitrates would go up to 180 every two days. Just be prepared! That's the best advise I can give you.
And congrats on your new puffer. I want to see lots of pictures.
Didn't mean to scare you. I'm sure you will do fine. The guy that had a Mbu in the 110g had him for 4 years I think. At 2 years old he was already 17" long. Just start with the biggest tank you can fit through the door then upgrade from there. You can do it! I know you can!
By the way....I can't get david to answer his phone.
Does anyone know where Herman is located?
I am picking him up tomorrow...I just have no clue from where.
