  • 55g stocking options

its filled with 2 gt, 1 rainbow shark, 2 khuli loaches, male convict, 4 convict fry, 1 blood parrot, electric lab, bumble bee cichlid, jewel cichlid, and one i forgot what it was called aeratus cichlid.

i def want to get rid of electric, bumblebee, jewel, 4 convict fry, 2 khuli loaches, and aeratus. these are free but you come get them.

i want to make it a south american theme tank and i dont know where to begin. a male green terror would be the center piece, im not sure what the sex are of the two i have now.

Make sure you have enough room for SA Cichlids in a 55g. That green terror is gonna get large, as do quite a few of the SA Cichlids.

Try some smaller geo's for bottom feeders. They always look really nice, they keep your tank super clean and some of them are tough enough to fight off a green terror.

    Good luck with your search.

i need some guidance. i have seen a big gt before but mine has stopped growing. it has gotten bigger since picking him up at petsmart but now he seems stumped. i used to have an oscar 2 inches smaller then him but now the oscar is easily double the gt size. anyways the oscar is no longer in my tank and what im really asking is what to feed this guy.

the whole tank gets fed twice a day with a cube of hikari spirulina brine, hikari cube of mysis shrimp, and a big pinch of hikari cichlid gold in the morning before i leave and at night when i get home.

green terrors grow a lot smaller than oscars. as for stuff to add, i would recommend severums. they are south american and go well with oscars and green terrors. for bottom feeders you're probably going to want to go with pictus catfish if you can find one at a decent size or stick with some of the different plecos. I just don't recomend getting one of the common plecs you see in fish stores. look around at some of the other fish stores besides petsmart and you'll see some awesome species. you'll spend more but it will be worth it. I always enjoy the royal plecos. ALso, rainbow shark is from asia, convict is central american, not south (although if you like him in there I say keep him) and the blood parrot is a toss up as its a hybrid between severums and different amphilophus species.

gts grow slowly and often reach platues in there growth, give it alittle while, he will start up again.

i had a male gt for 5 years.
i got him at 1"tl and he was raised and lived his whole life in a 55g and only got to 10"tl in 5 years.
at 2 years old he was only 8"tl.

          they grow slowly.

i would be happy to get some pics up of its current state right now but i have a ****ty camera and im afraid it wont show the true colors of the fish and lighting. i will get them up when i have a collection of decent shots.

great news. fish gallery said i could bring my fish in to trade for some credit. the ones im getting rid of are 2 khuli loach, bumble bee, yellow lab, 4x convict fry, jewel, rainbow shark, green terror

what i will have left is male convict, green terror, 2 blood parrots, common pleco

i went searching on the intraweb and it said that these fish would do great with the fish i already have. Cichlasomines from South and Central America, Pimelodids, Loricarids, Doradids, Silver Dollars, Pacus, Arawana.

while i was at fish gallery they had an amazing display tank with a green terror as the center piece. it looked pretty awesome and i wanted to replicate it but i didnt want to do a school of pacu as they have done because those things get huge. what can i do as an alternative?

Please for the love of God dont get Pacus or an Arowana for a 55g tank. If you wanna know what thats gonna be like, go in your closet and live there forever.

I like the Severum idea. I had a bunch of these guys. People call em the "poor man's discus" because they are very beautiful but not as expensive as some Discus.

Trade in that Pleco also. He's just gonna get huge and poop all over your tank. I have one right now that is almost 10" long and his poop is GINORMOUS.

I'd get a fancy pleco, either some Cory Cats (they come in so many different variations), some Geos and a few Severums. Do some cool rock work mixed with the thin driftwood. It'll look sick. Just my 2 cents.

yeah i want to move on to the fancier plecos but im putting a little money off my paychecks a bit at a time so i can hopefully buy a second hand 180g setup for a decent price. i love the look of the leopard pleco though and maybe after i get these guys a bigger home i will trade out the common i have for one.

well i was wrong about the pacu in their display. they were actually silver dollars. i decided to pick 6 up today. they are all at 1" or under. im holding off feeding until tmr because these guys are very skittish, especially since there are bigger fish in the tank.

silver dollars are eating well. since taking all those other fish out from the tank the green terror has started to become a lot more aggressive. before when the tank was full he used to be a huge wiener and would only get into a tussle here and there with the other gt which is now gone as well.

i need a question answered, is it okay to use water from my water hose outside to fill my tank for my weekly water changes? or would it be better to get the water i can dispense at krogers? -i live @ richmond, 77407

i use the hose because i can bring it right through the window but if the water from kroger would be better then i can use a 5 gallon jug which wouldnt be that much more of a hassle. my weekly water changes are only 5 gallons, should i amp this up to 10? the tank is a 55

use the water from out side, just pour the water from the hose into a bucket, add your dechlorinator, let the water sit 15-30 minutes then add would be the prefered method, but if you don't want to go through all of that, then you can add straight from the tap and ad dechlorinator as you go.
