these are now protected in the wild by the mexican government. they come from "Lago Media Luna" which means half moon lake. they are diminishing in the wild due to pollution and cross breeding caused by the altering of their natural habitat. hopefully i can ge them breeding and help spread them out.

Thank you for this. This illustrates exactly why we should strive to keep pure species strains in aquaria. It is possible that hobbyists could unkowingly save a species from extinction. However if they are allowed to crossbreed the species loses it viability.

      Good luck with these Rico

Front do you understand now why we should try to keep species from crossbreeding?

i have a passion for CA cichlids. everything i keep i try my best to breed and sell them dirt cheap just to help the species spread. alot of CA cichlids are diminishing from the hobby because the really nice and colorful specimens are being used to create flowerhorns. once we lose them in the wild it will be up to us to conserve these amazing fish.

I am sure you will have good luck...you breed every other fish you keep. just another example of how hybrids can ruin a species. Good luck man.

the first 4 died from being to small to hang in the 125 so i picked up 3 more and those all died from bloat along with all my bartoni. these 5 are my last try at these. if these dont make it im going to have to fuy some bigger ones from Don Conkel. he has WC ones right now that are ready to breed and they are only $37.50 on his wholesale list.

yes they are. all will lay eggs and guard the fry ferociously. some parents are so dedicated that if i wait too long to separate the fry they will let them pick at them. my male dovii's dorsal fin was messed up for awhile because the fry started picking at him.

when do they usually end up eating their own fry, or do they do that?

some will and some will actually breed again and raise both batches. of course the older batch will eventually eat all the small ones. it really varies. i leave most with the parents for at least a month
