  • Convict breeding...failure?

Alright, so we all know that convicts breed like rabbits, I've had my own share of those, but the current pair we are keeping...well, they're quite strange.

For starters, the male is around 4-5inches long, and the female only around 2.

When we intrduced them, they went crazy and tried to fight, not just lip-locking, but going at the sides and fins as well.

In a state pf panic, we put a divider in the aquarium, one that's mesh so they can still see each other, but every second all they do is go at it through the divider.

Well, thinking it would never work, we were shocked to see the female lay eggs on her side, and thinking she might let him fertilize them, we removed the divider, only to see them go crazy again, fighting and the like.

We left them along together for about an hour, hoping they'd sort it out, but by the time we checked on them again, the eggs were gone.

This same thing has now happened a second time, and they're separated again, since we don't want the female to be killed.

Any ideas on how to solve this madness?

That's weird. I'd probably just keep them separated until they stop doing whatever it is they're doing with the divider in. Maybe they'll calm down with time. I gather from the post this was a blind introduction? Sometimes, they just don't like each other right away. . . or ever. Sometimes males are just hyper-territorial.

Tell your boss you need to go home to take care of your "cichlids." It sounds an awful lot like "sick kids." )

        Ha, I know right?

And theyve been like that for over two months, and when we introduced her, we rearranged he entire tank, to no avail. Now she'll simply lay eggs, but not allow him near them.

Strangest pair of convicts I've ever seen..

And does anyone maybe know what causes this:

The mails tail grew out extensions, but rather on just the tops and bottom edge, they grew out all throughout his tail, so instead of streams, he has a jagged looking tail. Its like he couldn't STOP growing just at the normal extensions. I've never seen another one do this..any imput?

What is the status on the breeding?

                Just curious,
