Aquascaping

Have a couple of questions regarding aquascaping for the South American Cichlid aquarium I'm planning.

What needs to be done to coconut shells before adding them to an aquarium?

What types of leaves can be used in an aquarium and how do you prepare them for your tank?

I don't use coconut shells, so can't help there.

But for greens, I use all kind of plastic and silk plants. I just wash soak them in bleach water for awhile, then soak in clear water and rinse well Have them in ALL my tanks for years. Never a single problem.
