QT'd Convicts

I'm currently qting 4 black convicts...2 male 2 female. They all have 1 cloudy eye each, so I'm treating them with melafix (I'm on the 4th day of treatment) Yesterday I checked the tank and there was a large circular "hole" where gravel was missing 8O Please tell me these guys are not about to spawn???

Ok we wont tell you, but looks like they are trying to tell you they are staking out territory and getting ready.

If melafix does not clear up the eyes, try API's E.M Erythromycin Tablets  That works really good for cloudy eye.

CFL - my convicts are breeding as we speak.. and I am attempting to move them to their own tank this weekend.  I just hope they dont breed before that.

So you bought two pairs of Convicts.......what were your expectations again??  This sounds like CichlidFan telling his fish not to mess around until they are 21 or something...LOL!!!!!

No, I bought 7 for them to eventually pair off. I'm qting the 2 "pair" (which they never actually paired off) because they all have cloudy eye. I wasn't expecting them to breed yet at all. All 4 are in a 5gal QT tank being treated with melafix.

Speaking of breeding, they are all roughly between 2-2.5". Are they already big enough to breed?? Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about breeding, spawning, etc...

I'm wanting to say that mine bred when they were 2.5".  Once they started though....it was like clockwork.

They are definatly large enough to breed. If they are breeding then you will need to move on pair becuase they get very mean and protective.


Also convicts are known for rearranging thier surroundings. So they might just be bored and mocing rocks around. My male convicts likes to make mounds in the gravel all the time

I hope they are just rearranging...but I have a bad feeling they aren't! 1 female is hoovering over the "hole" and chasing the other female away. They could at least wait until the cloudy eye goes away, I don't have a place to put the other 2 if this is what they are doing  8O

Might have to get another tank

perhaps you can try and place some sort of rock divider in the middle of the tank.  Maybe calm things a bit if they dont see eachother. If they do breed things might get ugly

There's not much room in it to begin with. It's a 5 gallon hex!! *sigh*

Perhaps if you took the gravel out they wouldn't want to breed?  And any other decorations.  I don't know if it'd work but at least they wouldn't have territories to claim.

That's a thought, that's the only thing in the tank is a very thin layer of gravel....I'll check that out when I get home.

ehh of they breed, just siphon out the eggs... they will forget about then a day or so and will breed again soon lol

Well, I really don't mind having the babies. I'm just worried about the other 2 in the tank. I don't want them beatin because I have qt'd them!!
