It use to be sufficient to look at the finnage. Pointy= male. Rounded=female. Nowadays some breeders use hormones... making all JDs with pointy fins. Looking for blue speckles on the gill plate is another way. If blue speckles go all the way down, then you have a female if not, then it's a male.

Sexing Jack Dempseys

It has been quite some time since I had any Jack Dempseys, but I remember looking at the finnage when I did keep them. Was unaware of breeders using hormones, but had heard that the Electric blues were fairly difficult to sex properly and that might account for it as well. I'd recommend hunting a local seller that deals in stock from local breeders or has larger fish for sale. Houston Aquatics always has older jacks that might be easier to sex...In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Looking at the gill plate is the best way to tell male/female as armthehomeless has said. If there are a lot of blue spangles on the bottom side of the gill plate, then it is female. Males are missing all the blue spangles on the bottom of their gill plates.220G All male Hap/Peacock
