  • South American Discus Community - 2014 New Year Update

I have 2 Fx6 filters, 1 Eheim 2217, 1 Eheim 2215 and a 36W UV Sterilizer running on my 150G tank. Inside 1 Fx6, I have Matrix, BioMax and ChemiPure Elite. In the 2nd Fx6, I have Matrix, BioMax, Purigen and ChemiPure Elite. The 2217 moves water through the UV system and is loaded with all standard Eheim media including Substrat, Floss, etc. The 2215 is loaded with Seachem De-Nitrate with Eheim pre-filter media, blue sponge top and bottom floss. I have the ball valves slowing flow in the 2215 to <50GPH in order to cultivate Anaerobic BB to eat Nitrates which I have some spike in at times due to my bio load and feeding regimen. I also have a 250GPH and a 450GPH Hydro Powerheads toward the bottom at opposite ends one from and back near bottom... no dead zones... crystal clear water... and I do 50% water changes twice a week... 40 RO and 20 tap using prime with a little Discuss buffer only in tap and when needed to maintain 6.8 pH.

My water chemistry is 6.8 pH, 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite and 10-20 ppm Nitrate. I recently added more plants to help me manage nitrates and I added the Nitrate Reactor 2215 filtration system. I feed bloodworms and beef heart in the evening after work and Tetra Color bits in the morning... this is for my 11 Discus, 2 Trapajos Geophagas and 7 Blue Rams. I also have 30+ Rummies, 30+ Cardinals, 20+ Hatchetfish, 6 Red Eyes, 1 Snowball Pleco, 1 Whiptail Catfish and 5 Cory Catfish which I feed small pellets and flakes and I usually drop on algae tab per day... I have 2 swords plants which I dose with Iron, Excel and Comp Blend as needed... and I have two pieces of driftwood on a combination of sand and gravel substrate...

Here are my latest pictures of the SA Community fish and decor...

Thank you all for the feedback. I have to spend a fair bit of time on it but I enjoy the hobby.

All the new filters and UV are nice.
How often do you do water changes?
                The tank looks busy.
