i still use carbon as well...but the purigen is definitely a better investment and am switching everything over. its not as easy to use it in an HOB but i balance the bag to make it work. i recharge it maybe every 6 weeks, or when it is pretty much solid brown. but same as you i just buy the cheap bleach from walmart.
