  • I've Got Wood - And Tannis

The rescape now got another component in my Geo tank. First was the gravel to sand conversion, and now I am getting the artificial ornaments out slowly. I just added this massive piece of driftwood which will become the central piece

    1) Going to be a pain to anchor. it essentially is being held down by the rim of the tank and one of the branches is against the front of the tank (plus the geos dug all the sand out from under it).

    2) I only power washed it, so now is turning the water color slowly.
->Anything I can do other than WCs for the tannis? Never had to deal with it.
->I guess this may drop the pH as well, so will have to monitor. The Geos though would probably enjoy a lower pH anyway

Purigen will remove the tannins and leave the good soft water effects.

        Looking good!

You can cut the wood flat and mount it to a flat piece of slate to solve the floating issue. You can cut the wood at an angle if you want a slant look inside the tank.

To remove tanning, you can boil it or use carbon (work for sure) or purigen as suggested. (I have no experience with using purigen to remove tanning).

Purigen is great stuff. better then carbon for tannins. As for the floating tie it to a rock till it wont float anymore.

i will be throwing in the purigen tonight.

i typically just set a rock on driftwood to keep it submerged...just need to go buy/find a large rock. would prefer not to cut the piece. will take a long time to sink on its own. a piece in my 75gal is nowhere near as heavy and still floats...i dont know how many months so far...

I see some folks get a tub or pond and sink it in there for months to water log larger pieces

and purigen will take care of any tannins you will get. Likely not see a big swing in Ph, due to our crazy TDS. In a bit softer water it causes more swings, but our liquid rock it hardly nudges it really.

What's the proper way to recharge purigen?

Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metallic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Use regular 8.25% hypochlorite household bleach (non-scented, no dyes, do not use a splash-less bleach). Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 4 tablespoons of PrimeŽ, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. For freshwater use, soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoon of buffer per cup of water (Discus BufferŽ, Neutral RegulatorŽ). Original color and full activity should now be restored and PurigenŽ is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul PurigenŽ and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit. (Taken from Seachem's website)

i never used purigen until i met roy haha the words bleach and aquarium never seemed safe to me. but it is actually very easy to recharge. costs more up front but getting to use it again and again makes it worth it :)

put purigen in half of the HOB for now after a 30% WC...see how it works. testing out a more generic mesh bag. came like 3 for $16, so a few bucks cheaper than seachem's bag...had again good reviews

I probably should just buy a trash can from home depot for the larger pieces...but i dont see myself buying any more of this size. my 75g already has enough driftwood and this one piece in the 56g will be enough when i add rocks

It is magic beans, never run a tank without it again... I personally just ignore the buffer step and Prime the hell out of it after a solid rinse. Just use the cheapest straight bleach from Wal Mart. Only takes a day or so. I also know a lot of folks that just toss it and buy new every time. I only recharge once a year on most of mine though I run far more then they recommend. I only run bio, mech, and Purigen on all our tanks
