  • Six severum species!

I am collecting and breeding severums so I decided I should do a little research. I knew there were several species of severums but didn't know there are at least 6 species. I am just learning and trying to understand nomenclature but it seems to me I am being inaccurate in describing these six species as severums. They are Genus Heros and only one specie is severus. Here is the list.
    Heros appendiculatus
Heros efasciatus This is the common severum
    Heros notatus
    Heros severus Mouth Brooder
    Heros spurius
Red Shoulder Severum, specie name not yet assigned but apparently considered a valid specie

I bought a medium sized severum a few months ago and was told it was a mouth brooding severum. I thought this was silly. But I learned today that Heros severus is a mouth brooding severum. I am going to try to breed those. I would love to see that!

Now I know I have 3 different species of severums. No, three different species of Heros! Let's keep calling them severums though! Much easier!

Here is a government database of taxonomic information.

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS, www.itis.gov) partners with specialists from around the world to assemble scientific names and their taxonomic relationships and distributes that data openly through publicly available software. The ITIS mission is to communicate a comprehensive taxonomy of global species that enables biodiversity information to be discovered, indexed, and connected across all human endeavors. ITIS is made up of 11 active MOU partners committed to improving and continually updating scientific and common names of all seven Kingdoms of Life (Archaea, Bacteria, Protozoa, Chromista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia).
