Jacob is the dark areas in the sand from the soil? I am thinking of having a sand/soil substrate but I am worried about the soil drifting onto the sand.

no that's algae growing on the sand i put a clear strip of plastic between the sand and soil i have a bunch left over if you want to come by check out how i did it i can give you a bunch
