  • Algae eater for a discus aquarium?

Hello everyone. I have a question.... What is a good algae eater that is compatible with a discus aquarium set up. I do a 50% water change at least once a week but with the warm water and lights I always have some algae appear. So...... I am looking for suggestions on what would be a good algae eating tank mate.

    thanks

Almost any pleco you want will work. Most like warm waters and shouldn't harm your discus. Bristlenose plecos seems to do a great job of cleaning up algae and they're available at most of the LFS here in Houston.

There's some that will require driftwood as well. Some don't eat algae.

Make sure the plecos are well fed, sucker mouth fish tend to find a liking to the alone coat on discus

Seriously Fish has a very useable database if you know what species of Discus you have and can find their collection river. By searching their database you can find what species are natarually found in the same section.

i have a feeling these discus were bred not collected? i use mystery snails in my angel tank.

6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails
29g- geo grow-out, angels, 12"fire eel, dwarf frog, apple snails
45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers

            75g-
2 oscars, parrot, silver dollars, albino channel cat, syno euptera, bichir, baby jaguar, convicts, yabby

I was just unaware of the actual subspecies, with that info I could direct a bit better for native locality and loricards that would likley share habitat in the wild.

Many plecos are not compatible w/ discus in that they much rather compete for food than worry w/ algae & during this frenzy can gore your discus or try to clean off body slime. Bristlenose for the most part will wait for food to settle to lower tank & do a good cleanup job as well as working on algae. Try netrite snails for mini algae eater/ really do a nice job & though they lay eggs thier survival even if they hatch is nil -- takes brackish to survive reproduction so no crazy infestation & lots of cool variations. Apple snails can reak havoc on your plants Just some ideas. V

Stay away of any pleco and otocats, sooner or later they gonna bother your discus, specially at night when your discus are sleeping.

I kept ABNs with discus and had no issues. One of the best algae eaters for a discus tank is the Amano shrimp. I had a couple dozen in my discus tank and they do a great job on algae.

+1 on the Amano shrimp. If you just want plecos. Fancyfish has some nice looking female ABN. In the fish market.
