  • fx5 and pool filter sand

I have a fx5 and the filter is very powerful. Planning to get pfs, just want to know if any of yall have this combo and have any problems/issue with the sand getting suck up into the filter? Thanks in advance.

i don't have the fx.. but i do have other type of canisters, never really had problem with it unless you move around the sand a lot or the intake sits close to the sand... i put prefilter/sponge covering on mine intakes...

I have a FX5, and use PFS, I would recommend that you consider cutting the intake tube about 4 inches before installing it in your tank. Or, put a prefilter/sponge on the intake tube.

or just shut off the FX5 if you plan on shifting the sand around

I have the FX5 along with PFS ... never have any problems. It's running on a tank full of Frontosas who are known to dig and spew sand.

To those of you who do not have any problems...Do you not find sand in the bottom of your canister when you clean it?

I ask because everytime I clean my FX5, I usually have a fair amount of sand in the bottom of the canister.

Now it may have something to do with the two power heads I have in the tank as well???

                  Just curious..

I run bare bottom tanks so I've never had the issue. I own three FX5's and what I have read, and I can highly see the possibility, is that with the pump on bottom of the FX5 any and all debris that makes it past the media goes into the bottom which can clog, damage, and wreak havoc on the rotor assembly of the pump.

Personally, I would do all that I could to prevent any sand whatsoever from getting into the filter. The FX5 is a really nice and easy filter to work with, as long as you do not routinely empty and clean the motor well. They do have a tendency to get a leak there if you do not lubricate that o-ring.

I always clean out that well, becuase it will extend motor and rotor life the cleaner that area and rotor are.

                      ciclidfan,

I only have the filter a couple months, so I haven't clean it.

Lift the intake tube 6" from the sand level or put a round coarse foam made by marineland over the intake tube without the strainer. the best filters for sand are eheim classic or any 2260 and up models.
