  • List of Fish Sensitive to Medications

I thought I would start a list of fish that are sensitive to medications. Please feel free to add to it, but don't clog it up with random crap. The idea is that this thread would be able to be viewed by people who are about to treat their fish tank with some sort of Medication.

    Scaleless or Incompletely Scaled Fish
    -All species of botia
-most loaches (ex: clown loach and kuhli loach)
    -All Cordydoras species
    -Knifefish (ex: Black, Brown, Ghost)
    -Sharks (Bala, Red-Tailed, Black, Pangasius)
    -Plecos

Scaled fish less than one inch
    Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Great Idea, but you can do better.

Sensitive to which chemicals / meds ?
How much is too much ?
Are there symptoms to look for ?
what alternate meds will work ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I'm not trying to create a novel here. Most of these fish are sensitive to multiple medications. I'll leave it up to other resources to write a more exact "care guide" for each particular fish. Making all of these specifications would defeat the purpose of have someone look at the list before treating a tank. Suppose I write a 46 page diatribe spewing a plethora of information... it doesn't do any good if nobody reads it.

The idea was/is to look and see if a fish in your tank is on the list and (if one is) seek further information at that point.

It was pointed out by another HFB member (FuzzyDragon09 I think) that a red-tailed shark may not have died if there was a simple list that he/she could have referred to. That was why this thread was started.

"Silver-Sided" Tangs - Be careful using praziquantel. I have read instances where dosing with Parasite Clear has caused Calliochromis and Xenotilapia to die.

Always becareful when dosing with powerful meds on fish that you've never dosed before.

              I'd read it.

Yes and I thank you! :emt_thumbs: I wish I had this earlier but I don't have a TARDIS so... But anyways, thank you. And you can write your book if you want. I'll definitely read it! We could make it a sticky. If you don't want to make it too long we could just stick to writing down the medications that do require smaller doses.

EDIT: Ooh! Another fish group that needs half or partial doses of meds is the Polypterus genus (Bichirs) and the Erpetoichtys calabaricus (Rope Fish). They cannot tolerate anything copper based. Malachite green, victoria green, methyline blue, and ones with formalin should be half doses. Aquarisol and quickcure should be 1/2 to 2/3 and Parasite guard should be 3/4 of a dose. But Pimafix, Melafix, Kanacyn, Maracyn, Maracyn-2 and Metronidazole can be used as full doses. [I've been stockpiling Bichir information from the internet, so that's how I know about this. I just couldn't find any info on Red-Tailed sharks.]
